Unlike many existing user research method books, "Understanding Your Users" has more practical rigor in the content beyond the basic introduction. In addition to describing the methods, the authors provide in-depth real life examples of how exactly the methods were applied, as well as supporting outputs and visuals. Many of the tips that I've discovered by being in the trenches of user research are also nicely layered throughout the chapters.I almost smacked my head after reading one of the chapters (i.e., Card Sorting), because I had spent an entire week scavenging online materials and triangulating explanations on the topic--when it only took me less than half an hour to do the same thing by reading the book chapter!Get the book. It's worth every penny.
Understanding your users is such an insightful and practical applications to be used in the day to day work force. Methods of modifications, conducting proper focus groups, field studies and prepping a proper research takes a great deal of time and care. I would Highly recommend this book to read and to take to work or even in school.
The best textbook I had for explain UX theories and different types of user studies. Uses language from the field. Could read this and ace an interview.
A little dry and a bit of a slog, but it’s depth is a great resource.
After teaching graduate-level user research courses for years with other texts, I adopted this text and have been extremely happy with the content. The authors do a great job explaining numerous methods and goals with plentiful citations to source literature, and they describe many approaches to implementing research in different organizations and cultures.The textbook uses a 4-part structure that starts by laying out the foundation for an effective user research program, followed by practices and techniques to ensure research activities are prepared and planned effectively, and ending with final recommendations and considerations. The central part of the text covers 7 categories of methods, with many examples of how to prepare, deploy, report, and act on the findings. Each chapter includes resources, best practices, tips to gain adoption and engagement, and links to help practitioners hit the ground running with their research.The text is written to support both a "cover-to-cover" approach to reading, as well as a "jump around to different topics and methods of interest" approach. I highly recommend this text for instructors as well as practitioners at any stage in their research career!
Good book!
I'm a huge fan of the first edition - it was my go-to resource when I started as a UXR a decade ago. I was excited to buy the new edition to share with the designers and PMs I work with.But this new edition is one I'll be giving away to my colleagues, rather than keeping. While the content has likely been improved, the printing makes it much harder to read and use on a day-to-day basis -- with roughly 1 mm between the text and the white page boundary. It feels like the publisher tried to cram way too much content into way too few pages. It made my head hurt to try to read it.Especially as a usability practitioner, it's hard for me to understate the impact of poor product usability -- or in this case, the poor readability and legibility of this book. This is a shame - the content deserved better.
This second edition is no mere re-tread of the first. It sets a new standard for 'when' and 'why' to use research techniques, and for supplying the actual "how-to's" it leaves other popular 'Methods' books in the dust.
